VLT Carioca starts Line 3 operation in Rio de Janeiro

VLT Carioca, which operates the Rio de Janeiro Light Rail Line, opened its Line 3 in late October. Mayor Marcelo Crivella made the inaugural trip alongside the president of the VLT Carioca concessionaire, Marcio Hannas.

With Line 3, the system consolidates a 28km network of tracks, 29 stops and stations and 32 trains that have been running since June 2016 in Rio’s Center and Port Region. The new stretch connects Central do Brasil station to Santos Dumont Airport in only 18 minutes. The route has 10 stops.

In three years of operation, VLT Carioca has surpassed the 50 million passenger mark and the expectation with the new line is that, in the first months, the total number of passengers exceeds 100 thousand users per business day.
