Juscelino Kubitschek Station will be the first of the Fortaleza Metro, in the capital of the State of Ceará in the Northeast of Brazil, to have photovoltaic plates for generating solar energy. The installation of 588 photovoltaic panels at the JK station has now been concluded, which the company will obtain authorization from Enel to operate the system and carry out the final tests, before starting operation. All photovoltaic panels and other necessary items are already installed.

The solar energy generated by the Metro will be transferred to the capital’s electricity grid, and then reverted to the Metro as a credit in electricity production, which will result in compensation in the company’s energy bills. It is estimated that the amount of solar energy produced at JK and at Padre Cícero Station – which is also receiving solar panels – is sufficient to cover the electrical demand of at least four stations on the Southern Line.
