The Carioca VLT completed two years of circulation in the Center and Port Region of Rio de Janeiro, on June 05. The system adds about 23 million passengers transported on more than 200 thousand trips made in the period. Currently, 2 lines and 26 stops / stations are in operation.
In these two years, the Light Rail Vehicles have already runned over 1 million kilometers in total, with a current average of 70 thousand km/month. The stops of higher movement confirm the project’s integrative intent. The Central station/stop, which connects with train, subway and bus; Colombo, with integration between the two lines of the VLT; and Cinelândia, with connection to the subway, represent 30% of the passengers flow.
A year ago, about 35,000 people used from VLT daily. Today, the number is approximately 65 thousand, an increase of 85%. From this total, 70% use the system for work-related displacements. With the VLT in circulation, there are about 46 thousand fewer vehicles on the streets of Rio de Janeiro every day, considering the use rate of vehicles in 1.4 passengers.
