The Government of the State of São Paulo, in Brazil, launched the SP Nos Trilhos program with more than 40 state projects for transporting passengers and cargo by rail, which total investments estimated at R$ 194 billion and more than 1 thousand km of railway network. Intercity Trains , Light Rail Vehicles, urban trains and subways are included. The State of São Paulo is Brazil’s main economy.
“The metro-rail sector enthusiastically welcomed the São Paulo Government’s program to expand service to the population with rail transport. The State has the largest urban rail network in the country and the initiative reinforces the commitment to the development of this fast and efficient mode of transport”, explains Joubert Flores, President of the Council of the National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos).

Subway and urban trains – The Government of São Paulo authorized studies of possible concessions for existing branches, such as Lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red of the Metro and 11-Coral, 12-Safira and 13-Jade of the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM). The technical analysis also covers the expansion of Lines 2-Green and 4-Yellow and the completion of the 6-Orange subway, in addition to the implementation of completely new projects, such as Lines 19-Celeste and 20-Pink.
Intercity Trains – The TIC Eixo Oeste will connect Greater São Paulo to the city of Sorocaba. The project has already been qualified and is in the technical studies phase, with an auction scheduled for 2025. The estimated investment is R$8.5 billion. In another proposal, the TIC Eixo Leste will connect the cities of São Paulo and São José dos Campos, with a project expected to cost around R$10 billion and already under analysis of technical feasibility and financial structuring. The total length of the line could be between 80 km and 130 km, generating around 5,000 jobs and an estimated travel time of 75 minutes. The TIC Eixo Sul project, which will connect the capital to Santos, is estimated at around R$15 billion and has entered the project feasibility study and business modeling stage. The total length of the new railway line is expected to be between 80 km and 115 km, with the forecast generating 13,000 jobs for the works. The project is an alternative to unburden the Anchieta-Imigrantes highway system, which is currently the main connection between the city of São Paulo and Baixada Santista.
Light Rail – The Campinas Light Rail will connect the city center to Viracopos International Airport and also to the municipalities of Hortolândia and Sumaré. It will be 44 km long and have 18 stations, with an estimated investment of R$4.5 billion. The project, which is progressing with the beginning of feasibility studies to structure the initiatives, will join the TIC Eixo Norte to the capital and the Intermetropolitan Train (TIM) between Campinas and Jundiaí. The government is also carrying out feasibility and modeling studies for a Light Rail in Sorocaba, 25 km long to the city of Iperó and expected to be integrated with the TIC Eixo Oeste to the capital. The planned investment for the project is R$ 2.5 billion, with an estimated generation of up to 2 thousand jobs. Sections 2 and 3 of the Light Rail Baixada Santista are also on the SP Nos Trilhos radar. With a total estimated value of around R$1 billion, the new branches will be 15 km long, directly benefiting the populations of the municipalities of Santos and São Vicente.
