With the impacts of the new coronavirus pandemic, the Brazilian metro-rail sector registered a -55.9% drop in the volume of passengers transported from March to December/2020, compared to the same period in 2019. This reduction generated a financial deficit of –R$ 8 million last year, as shown in the Balance Sheet of the Brazilian Railroad Sector 2020/2021, released by the National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos).
Over the 12 months of 2020, the subway, city train and Light Rail Vehicle systems transported only 1.7 billion passengers.
“The metro-rail sector is going through its worst crisis and there is no prospect of demand recovery in the short term, since social isolation is necessary to contain the spread of the virus and the population’s immunization should extend throughout this year”, explains Joubert Flores, Chairman of the Board of ANPTrilhos.
In addition to the impacts of the pandemic on the sector, the Balance of the Railroad Sector presents the projects in progress, the prospect of expansion this year and the benefits of the sector.
