The rail passenger transport systems in Brazil showed a reduction of -73.2% in the number of passengers transported in the 2nd quarter/2020, in relation to the same period of the previous year, due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19. The data are part of the Balance Sheet of the Metro Rail Sector 2nd Quarter/2020, released by National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos), which brings together subways Brazilian operators, urban trains and Light Rail Vehicles, on the 20th July.

The large reduction in demand was also reflected in the accumulated in the 1st semester, when the passenger movement was around 880 million people, considering the period from January to June 2020. Comparing to the 1st semester/2019, when 1.550 billion passengers were transported, it appears that the sector transported in the 1st semester/2020 only 57% of the amount expected for the period.

ANPTrilhos estimates that metro rail operators recorded a deficit in tariff revenue of around -R$ 3.6 billion, from March to June/2020.

ANPTrilhos keeps dealings with government agencies, Federal and State, seeking to balance the economic and financial balance of the provision of public service, to ensure the full operation of transport systems.
