The subway, urban train and Light Rail Vehicle systems in Brazil transported 1.8 billion passengers in 2021, showing a slight increase of 4.8% in demand, compared to 2020. The volume is -44, 1% lower than it was transported before the Covid-19 pandemic. The data are part of the Balance of the Brazilian Metrorail Sector 2021-2022, released by the National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTralhos), which brings together Brazilian operators.

“2021 was a year of great apprehension and uncertainty for the Brazilian subway sector, which remains heavily impacted by the crisis generated by Covid-19. Unfortunately, the scenario is still unstable and there is no expectation of a resumption of passenger demand this year that we registered before the pandemic”, explains Roberta Marchesi, Executive Director of ANPTrilhos.

Throughout 2021, the sector kept its projects in progress and 2 km of track and 2 new stations were inaugurated, João Dias and Mendes-Vila-Natal, on Line 9-Esmeralda of the São Paulo metropolitan train. Currently, the metro-railway network is 1,105 km long, has 47 lines, 619 stations and 5,196 passenger cars.
