The city of Rio de Janeiro began in early January the works of Line 3 of the Light Rail Vehicle (VLT), operated by the VLT Carioca concessionaire, in the central and port area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The new stretch of the VLT will have about 3 km and will connect Central do Brasil to the airport Santos Dumont, crossing Marechal Floriano Avenue, with three new stops. The connection with Line 1 will take place at Avenida Rio Branco, between the São Bento and Candelária stops.

At present, VLT Carioca is about 23 km long and 26 stations.
