The Engineering Institute (EI) promoted an international meeting with the theme “Safe return of people to public transport”, with the participation of specialists from Brazil and Portugal, who presented the measures adopted in public transport in the face of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, on July, 14th.
The President of the National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos), Joubert Flores, gave a lecture on the impacts of the pandemic on passenger transport on rails. He explained that demand will not resume quickly. Before the pandemic, 70% of trips were for work reasons and, given the current scenario, many people will remain working from home and the sector expects a permanent loss of passengers. And he emphasized that it will be necessary to evaluate the opportunities for urban mobility and the adoption of urban planning measures, aimed at the efficiency of transport networks, without overlapping lines and with integration between the modes of displacement.
The event also featured lectures by the Extraordinary Secretary of Urban Mobility of Porto Alegre and President of the National Forum of Secretaries and Directors of Urban Mobility, Rodrigo Tortoriello; the President of Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa and Transport Operators of the Lisbon Region (OTLIS), Tiago Farias; and the Director of IZIMOOVE de Portugal, consultancy on urban mobility and sustainability, Bernardo Alves.
