Estimates by the National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos) point out that the Brazilian metro-rail systems accumulate a deficit in tariff revenue of around -R$ 3.3 billion, due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19. In March, only in the second half of the month, the reduction in revenue was R $ 500 million, while in April the deficit recorded was -R$ 1.1 billion and in May around -R$ 1.0 billion.
“The metro-rail sector understands that the situation is a public health issue and that there is a need for social isolation to prevent contamination, but there is concern about the economic-financial balance of the public budget and Public-Private Partnerships. Transport is an essential service for the population and operators need government support so that there is no compromise in serving the population that needs to travel, especially with the gradual resumption of economic activities in cities ”, emphasizes Joubert Flores, Board Chairman of ANPTrilhos.
ANPTrilhos is in contact with federal and state government agencies to present the claims suggested by the sector for maintaining the provision of passenger transport services on rails and the workforce.
