Metro of São Paulo, which is responsible for four metro lines and a monorail in the city of São Paulo, has started the operation of a new 2.8 km stretch and three new stations of Line 5-Lilac. The inauguration was at the beginning of September and more than 60 thousand users will benefit from the opening of this new extension. With the opening of this new stretch, the metro rail system in São Paulo will have 81,1 km and 71 stations.
Line 5 uses communication and signalling system CBTC and is going to work in assisted operation (with no fees charged) for 70 days, as a way to present the stations for the users, granting the infrastructure necessary for the terminals operation and allowing the equipment and systems maturation, such as electrical supply, signalling, traffic control and telecommunication. The operation in this format follows the international standards for the opening of new metro stations. The working hours will extend gradually until it reaches its full operation, from 4:40 am to midnight, as it is in the whole network.
The expansion of the 5-Lilac line comprises the construction of 11 km and 11 stations, from Adolfo Pinheiro (opened in February 2014) to Chácara Klabin, besides the acquisition of 26 new trains, implantation of controlling and signalling systems – CBTC – in the entire line and the construction of maintenance patio Guido Caloi.
The investment for the entire enterprise is R$9.97 billion. When finished, from Capão Redondo to Chácara Klabin, around 850 thousand people may use daily the 20 km and 17 stations of Line 5.
